Costa Mesa Speedway - Track Facts - Costa Mesa Speedway 2004 marks the 36th consecutive year of Professional Speedway Motorcycle Racing at the famous Costa Mesa "bullring" oval. The first modern United States National Championship was held at this very racetrack way back in 1969 and the actual racing surface has changed little since then. Costa Mesa Speedway was originally a championship Rodeo ring. From this, a Speedway oval was graded out of the hard Southern California adobe clay. Early events were held on the clay track but it became apparent that a cushion was needed to produce better racing. Decomposed granite (D.G.) was used from several suppliers until the best mix was found in North Hollywood. Recently, the entire track was widened by over 3 feet to allow more racing room. The inside pole is often moved in or out to allow for a variety of racing lines and to promote passing. For this season's races, look for a track which is fairly heavy with fresh D.G. and has been soaking in water for 3 days! This type of surface best prolongs the dreaded "blue groove" which makes outside passing more difficult and dictates "one line" racing for the riders. Keep your eye on the track during the wet and heavy 1st round. Many events have been won and lost right there. Watch as the spinning rear wheel of the motorcycle creates two distinct racing lines, the inside groove and the outside cushion. The inside groove is the shortest, surest and often the fastest way around Costa Mesa Speedway. Unfortunately, a rider who is leading is most often blocking the inside groove causing a trailing rider no chance other than to try the outside cushion. The outside cushion is the dark, fluffy dirt just beyond mid-track. Riders love it and hate it. It can propel a skilled rider past his competition, or through the wall! The outside cushion can pay big dividends or big penalties. Ouch! The hottest tip is to use the cushion when you have to, then get back to the safer groove. The ability to both read and ride is a major key to victory at Costa Mesa Speedway. Costa Mesa Track Stats: Length: 185 yards on the pole Shape: Varies from oval to football or egg with pole placement Width: Straight 30' Corners 46' Surface: Clay base with D.G. surface Arena Size: 270' x 125' Seating Capacity: 7,500
