Nissan - In the automotive world, progress is a necessary element of survival, and nothing is so exemplary of Nissan’s vitality and advancement as its success in the last four decades of professional auto racing. “There is no better proving grounds of a company’s engineering mettle and spirit than motorsports,” said Ron Stukenberg, senior manager, Nissan Motorsports marketing and operations. “Nissans, piloted by some of racing’s finest drivers, have captured victory countless times throughout the past four decades, and we look forward to creating more historic moments with our new racing initiatives and NISMO’s official entry in the United States.” Nissan Motorsports and driver John Morton set a precedent for the next 30 years of Nissan racing in the early ‘70s, as he drove Brock Racing Enterprise’s (BRE) Nissan 240Z to a Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) C-Production National Championship in 1970 and, after earning the pole in every SCCA event he entered, defended that title in ’71, landing him California Sports Car Club Driver of the Year honors. He followed with consecutive 2.5 Challenge Series Trans-Am Championships in 1971 and 1972 piloting BRE’s legendary Datsun 510, winning six of nine races started and earning both the Manufacturer’s title for Datsun and Datsun Driver of the Year accolades. Nissan rounded out the ‘70s with four different drivers in three different Nissans winning five more C-Production National Championships, plus an International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) GTU Championship. The ‘80s began with another IMSA championship, this time in the GTO division. Nissan also won three SCCA GT-1 Championships from 1982 to 1986. As the ‘80s came to an end, development of a new car, the Nissan GTP ZX-T began producing spectacular results. Brabham, usually partnered with Nissan veteran Morton, dominated the 1988 IMSA racing season, winning eight events in a row and eventually a ninth on the way to capturing the first of four consecutive IMSA Driver’s Championship awards. The following year, Brabham and Nissan’s GTP ZX-T won 10 of 15 races to earn his second Driver’s Championship, along with Nissan’s Manufacturer’s Championship. Nissan and Brabham continued their success in ‘90 and ‘91, winning both Driver’s and Manufacturer’s Championships both years, this time in a Nissan NTP 90.
